A Child Such As This
Mark 9:37–“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
Golda takes her five children’s clothes out of a drawer and begins here daily ritual of dressing them. They are all babies and as she finishes changing the last one’s diaper, she props him up on her bed with the others and happily goes off to watch cartoons.
Golda’s body is thirty years old, but she is only five. She knows she is special, because she knows Jesus, and He has explained how God has allowed her body to grow in years, but kept her mind as that of a child. She understands this is because God loves her so much he did not wish for her to lose her childhood.
Her bed is neatly lined up with her children, and on her dresser in neat stacks are her books. Her mother and brother taught her to read. She has books of every Bible story ever written, and she can read them well as long as the words don’t get too big. Jesus told her not to worry about the big words because there really was no need for big words. They only complicated the world.
Golda’s life is simple, the way God planned for life to be. She is always smiling, and she lives on love. Her mother is the most beautiful person she has ever seen. She plays with her every day and takes her to the park. Golda does not play with the small children because their bodies have not grown yet and their minds do not understand how special Golda is.
Her father’s hugs when he comes home at night are eagerly awaited. Her brother’s playful teasing and sneaking her candy before supper is a secret they share and laugh about. Her brother is older than her. He is twelve. He still has sort of a young body. Mother says he will be growing up soon, though, and somehow this makes Golda a little sad.
Golda knows she has downs syndrome, her mother explained it to her. It really must make her special because when she goes out with Mother she always smiles at others and they always stare at her for a long time. She likes it when people look at her, because it makes her feel loved, and love is the only thing that matters to Golda.
Love is the only thing that matters.
She knows she will enter the Kingdom of Heaven one day, and she might get to go sooner than most people whose bodies grow in years, but Jesus told her not to fear. She will meet her family there one day and they will all be children. Golda is looking forward to this,
One night Golda‘s head starts hurting, and she goes to bed early. She changes all her babies, tucks them in, and says her prayers. Drifting off to sleep she thinks she hears music. She wakes in the night because she feels a presence of love around her. Jesus speaks to her softly and beckons for her to follow Him. Suddenly she feels like she is flying.
God has decided heaven could use a child such as this.
